Herbert J. Kuhlman

Herbert J. Kuhlman, age 89 of Cozad, passed away June 22, 2013 at the Golden Living Care Center in Cozad. Herbert was born August 1, 1923 at Los Angeles, California to Henry and Anna (Shetler) Kuhlman. Herbert attended high school before entering the U.S. Army, where he faithfully served his country in WWII. Throughout the war effort Herbert, a teenager at the time, fought in tanks all the way to victory in Germany. Following the war""s conclusion, Herbert returned to Los Angeles where he met Ruth, from Cozad, who worked in an armament factory with Herb""s sister. Herbert and Ruth moved to Cozad in 1949 to become farmers. Herb also learned the plumbing trade and worked over 20 years for Maline and Dodson plumbing shops. Herbert and Ruth had five children. Ruth died in 1968, at age 45 from cancer. On July 10, 1970 in Cozad, Herbert married Mary L. Hime, who was also a widowed in 1967. In 1973 Herbert and Mary moved to Phoenix, Arizona where they both worked at Maricopa County Hospital. Herbert, in the building maintenance and Mary, in admissions. Herbert retired in 1988. In December, 2009 they moved from Phoenix to Meadowlark Pointe assisted living at Cozad. Herbert was a proud part of what is often referred to as the ""Greatest Generation.""� He exhibited many of the wonderful qualities and values that have come to characterize his generation as special. His greatest effect on others was his sense of humor and kind ways. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandpa. Herbert enjoyed playing cards, traveling, golfing, woodcarving, his grandkids, and making people laugh. A memorial has been established in his memory. Condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com. Herbert was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth in 1968; son, Larry D. Kuhlman in 2009; and stepson, Michael Hime in 1995. Survivors include his wife, Mary Kuhlman of Cozad; children, Janice (Larry) Knoedler of Lexington, Henry (Dorothy) Kuhlman of Bowling Green, FL, Beverly (Dan) Bernal of Bellingham, WA, & Peggy (Dan) Pohlman of Arnold, MO; stepchildren, Nancy (Randy) Kopf of Lexington & Jerry Hime of Leadville, CO; grandchildren, Dustin Kuhlman, Nick Kuhlman (Henry's sons); Jason Bernal and Michelle Berg (Beverly's children); Jeffrey Knoedler and Kari Knoedler (Janice's children); Preston Stout and Jessica Stout (Peggy's children); Tiffany Kopf & Brandy Connerley (Nancy's daughters); Jason Hime and Bobbie Hime (Mike's sons); Graham Hime (Jerry's son); numerous great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Berryman Funeral Home Chapel in Cozad with Father Don O""Brien officiating. Inurnment will be held in the Cozad Cemetery at a later date. Visitation for memorial book signatures will be held on Friday, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.
