Fred Martin, age 72 of Elwood, passed away Friday, February 22, 2013 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Fred was born August 31, 1940 at Cozad, Nebraska to Henry R. and Nellie E. (Newhouse) Martin. He attended Cozad High School. On June 30, 1962, Fred married Patricia ""Patsy""� Putnam at Gothenburg in a double wedding ceremony that also involved Patsy""s sister. The couple was blessed with a son, Tom. Shortly after their marriage, Fred began work at the hay mill in Cozad. A few years later, the couple moved to Kearney where Fred was employed at RE Coldwell, and later Eaton. Fred and Patsy moved to Colorado briefly before moving to Lexington in 1975, where Fred worked at Sperry New Holland until 1985. After his time at New Holland, Fred went to work at Orthman Manufacturing for 15 years. Most recently, Fred had worked at Walmart in Lexington, where he enjoyed assembling the store""s bicycles. Fred enjoyed being outdoors in his free time. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, though he never seemed to have enough time to fish as much as he wanted. He also loved gardening, westerns and watching rodeos. He was a Nebraska football fan, and loved watching his granddaughters throughout all of their many activities. Fred was also active in the Elwood Booster Club for many years. Fred was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Callie McClendon; and 2 brothers, Wallace and Harry Martin. Survivors include his wife, Patsy Martin of Elwood; son, Tom (Melissa) Martin of Elwood; 3 grandchildren, Alexa and fiancé Andrew, Manon, Hadley; great granddaughter, Reagan; sister, Elaine (Bob) Keiser of Gothenburg; and many other relatives and friends. Services will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Elwood with Pastor Mary Fuller and Sharon Corder officiating. Burial will be in the Elwood Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Elwood. Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad is in charge of arrangements.
