Oscar Wayne Pfeiffer, age 87, of Eustis passed away on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at the Elwood Care Center. Oscar was born on January 28, 1925 at rural Frontier County to Oscar John. and Edna Helen (Boss) Pfeiffer. He attended rural school in Frontier County before attending Salem parochial school. In April of 1943, Oscar enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and faithfully served his country in WWII. While in the service Oscar was stationed in India and Burma as a medic throughout the war as a medic, and following its conclusion, he served in China. Following his discharge, Oscar returned to the Salem area, where he farmed. On October 5, 1947, he married Inez Mae Peterson at Holdrege. Their union was blessed with 3 children, Dennis, Cathy and Dan. The couple made their home at in and around the Frontier and Gosper Counties for a number of years, where Oscar assisted local farmers, and also farmed on his own for a number of years. In the early 1960""s, Oscar took a job managing the Eustis Coop, which ultimately led to him managing Bartley, Cozad and Farnam, at different times. Oscar retired from the Coop in the early 1980""s. In later years he enjoyed working at Elwood Care Center in the kitchen and eventually the Village Pie Maker in Eustis. In 2009, Oscar took part in the Dawson County Hero Flight to Washington DC with his son Dennis; which was a moment that Oscar was immensely proud of. Oscar was a tinkerer all his life, and in later years, he enjoyed making birdhouses out of license plates. He loved spending time canning with his wife, and he especially enjoyed being around his family. Oscar""s personality was one that would brighten anyone""s day. He was a genuine person and always had a smile on his face no matter how bad his day was. Oscar will always be remembered as a true gentleman. Oscar was a member of Salem Lutheran Church before becoming a member of St. John""s Lutheran Church in 1962. He held various offices on the church council and taught Sunday school for 7th and 8th grade for many years. Oscar was a lifetime member of the VFW and a 60-year member of the American Legion where he was active in Eustis for many years. He also served as a volunteer on the Eustis Fire Department for several years. A memorial has been established in his memory. Condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com. Peterson; brother, Bryce and wife Ida Lou Pfeiffer; brother-in-law, Dale Peterson; 2 sisters-in-law, Phyllis Lind, Jean Pfeiffer; great granddaughter, Alicyn Hosick; and nephew, Tyler Pfeiffer. Oscar is survived by his 2 sons, Dennis (Sheila) Pfeiffer of Wauneta and Dan (Sharon) Pfeiffer of Gothenburg; a daughter, Cathy (Joe) Babcock of Columbus, OH; special companion, Pauline Christensen of Elwood; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Robert (Dot) Pfeiffer of Dunbar and William (Berdina) Pfeiffer of Ralston; 2 brothers-in-law, Don Lind of Holdrege and Dean (Anita) Peterson of Thousand Oaks, CA and 2 sisters-in-law, Carmen (Ralph) Bork of LaHabra, CA and Mary Peterson of Gering; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Services are going to be held on Monday, November 26, 2012 at 10:00am at the St. John""s Lutheran Church in Eustis with Pastor Beverly Rautenberg-Panko officiating. Burial with military honors will be held in the Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2pm to 5pm at the St. John""s Lutheran Church in Eustis.
