John W. Zgud, age 94 of Cozad, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2015 at Kearney, Nebraska. John was born August 13, 1920 at Syracuse, New York to Matthew and Nellie (Sikora) Zgud. John attended school at Syracuse, New York. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII. John flew 30 missions over Germany as an Aerial Gunner. On May 12, 1945 he married Elizabeth Galusky at Philadelphia, PA. They made their home in Baltimore and Philadelphia before moving to Cozad in 1959. John attended plumbing school in Baltimore and worked as a plumber in Baltimore and Philadelphia. John owned and operated John's Plumbing in Cozad until his retirement in the 1980's. John was a faithful and devoted member and Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus at Christ The King Catholic Church in Cozad. He was active in Hospice as a volunteer in the Cozad area and Compassionate Friends Chapter in North Platte. He was also a member of the American Legion Air Force Association. John is survived by his son Michael (Mary Lou) Zgud of Kearney; 3 granddaughters, Zoe Zgud, Alexis (Marco) Abel and Brianna (David) Quiroz; great grandson Cyrus Zgud and special friends Dennis and Susan Bristol. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Elizabeth 'Betty' in 2004; son John, Jr.; daughter Mary and her husband Gonzalo Vallejo and their 2 children, Ilsa and Alonso; 4 sisters, Stella McAndrews, Jean Martinsky, Helen Haenn and Wanda Jo Lutz; and 2 brothers, Joseph and Adam Zgud. Memorials are suggested to Christ The King Catholic Church, Central Plains Hospice, Lincoln Co. Historical Society or Compassionate Friends Chapter in North Platte. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Monday, April 6, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ The King Catholic Church with Father Don O'Brien as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be at the Cozad Cemetery. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 5, 2015 at Christ The King Catholic Church. Visitation will be held Saturday from 4 to 8 at Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad, which is in charge of arrangements.
