Dallas L. Malcom of Cozad passed away November 11, 2015 at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha at the age of 62. Dallas was born May 1, 1953 at Cozad, Nebraska to Glenn and Vera 'Mama' (Melstrom) Malcom. He graduated with the class of 1972. He joined the U. S. Army that same year. He was stationed in Korea, Fort Riley Kansas and Fort Richardson Alaska, where Colonel Norman Schwarzkopf was Deputy Commander. His oldest son Jason was born there. While in Alaska, Dallas became an avid kayaker and cross country skier. In 1975, his life as a soldier ended and he began to grow a beard, never shaving it again. He returned to the lower 48 to work with his father as a carpenter. His second son, Dain, was born in 1976. In August of 1978, a car accident left Dallas paralyzed. His 37 year journey as a paraplegic began, and lasted 27 years longer than the doctors told him he would live. After a long hospital stay and extended rehab, Dallas attended the Colorado School of Mines. Always a gun enthusiast, he became a gunsmith. Collecting guns became his passion, which he passed along to his boys. Through those 37 years of dealing with V.A. hospitals, paper work, extended hospital stays, and lengthy bed confinements, Dallas always kept his determination, kind heart and sense of humor. Just a few months ago, after yet another serious surgery, he told a friend with a chuckle, 'I am too ornery and ugly to die'! But even ornery get tired and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. On Veteran's Day, November 11, 2015, Dallas was set free to walk again, talk to his family members adn pet and play with his beloved dogs at the Rainbow Bridge. Rest in peace Dal, you aren't ornery or ugly today. Dallas was preceded in death by his parents; brother Marvin and sister Marlene McCone. Survivors include his 2 sons, Jason Malcom of Cozad and Dain Malcom of Cozad; grandchildren, Ethan, Larkyn and Maddux Malcom and Briana McCance; great granddaughter, Tenleigh Jeanne Malcom; sister, Judy Kraus; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A memorial has been established in his memory. Online condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com.
