Leonard D Weismann

October 17, 1926 — November 11, 2016

Leonard Dale Weismann of Elwood, 90, passed away with family in close attendance on November 11, 2016 at Tabitha Journey House in Lincoln, Nebraska. Leonard was born October 17, 1926 to Albert and Caroline Weismann near Elwood, Nebraska. He attended public school in Gosper County, served our country during World War II as a part of the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet on the USS President Jackson, volunteered with the Elwood Fire Department for five years, worked on the family farm for several years, was an active member of the American Legion, served several years as an officer with Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood, and for 60 years he worked as a plumber with Leggott Plumbing in Elwood. Towards the end of his plumbing career he had the opportunity to help his son build his family’s house in Waverly, Nebraska by handling all of the plumbing on the project – Leonard saw this as his greatest professional achievement. Leonard married the love of his life, Annette Ione Jorges, on August 15, 1952, and the two of them enjoyed their life together in Elwood. Leonard enjoyed working in his yard and garden day and night, clear through the year if he could; he took great pride in how his yard and crops looked and loved giving food to family, friends and the community. Once his grandchildren were grown they kept him busy with all of their sporting events, taking him to the corners of the state as well as into Iowa to watch them participate in their Basketball, Volleyball and Soccer contests. He was also given many opportunities to travel with the kids to Waverly Football games while his son, Tim, was coaching. In 2009, Leonard was given the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. on the Dawson/Gosper County Hero Flight, with his son, Tim, as his guest. The trip was aimed around giving World War II veterans a chance to see the new World War II Memorial as well as many other memorials and monuments. The trip turned into much more than a simple sightseeing trip, it became a time for Leonard to share with his son more details and stories of his time in the Navy, things which he hadn’t shared before. Leonard is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Caroline Weismann; his wife, Annette Jorges Weismann; his brother, Martin Weismann; and his nephew, Barry Weismann. He is survived by four brothers, Walt, Jerome, Max, and James Weismann; his son, Tim Weismann and wife, Susan Wrage Weismann; and his two grandchildren Nick Weismann and Jessica Carr, her husband Jared Carr. Memorial contributions can be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Hospice of Tabitha (Journey House). Online condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com. Services will be held Monday, November 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood, Nebraska with Pastor Michael Wolff officiating.
