Amalia Cañas of Cozad passed away December 17, 2016 at Cozad Care Center at the age of 78. Amalia was born September 21, 1938 at Overton, Nebraska to Francisco and Leonor (Lubiano) Reyes. She married David Cañas on June 10, 1961 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington, Nebraska. Amalia stayed at home to raise her children. She loved to cook and take care of her family and friends. When her children were older, she went to work at Monroe Auto and retired after 25 years at the factory. Amalia enjoyed watching all sports, especially baseball and her beloved Huskers. Amalia enjoyed listening to Mexican music and was skilled at crocheting. She was a faithful and devoted member at Christ the King Catholic Church and was honored as Altar Society Lady of the Year in 2010. She had a very strong faith and always prayed for others. Amalia was an honorary chairperson for the 2016 Dawson County Relay for Life. She will be missed by many. She was preceded in death by parents; infant son, Clemente Cañas; 7 brothers, Mike, Frank, Lupe, Joe, Leo, Lupe and Ruben; and 3 sisters, Beatrice, Rosemary and Molly. Survivors include her husband, David of Cozad; 3 daughters, Estella (Rex Crisman) Beenblossom of Cozad, Raquel (Doug) Crick of Cozad, Carmela 'Coco' Cañas of Cozad; 1 son, Arturo (Cherry) Cañas of Cozad; granddaughters, Adrienne (Ryan) Rahmann of Cozad, Alexa Cañas of Hastings, Christian Cañas of Arizona, Samantha Crick of Cozad and Alaine Cañas of Cozad; great granddaughters, Maya, Kyndall and Quinn Rahmann of Cozad; twin sister, Emily (Tom) Hernandez of Kearney; brothers, Sal Reyes of El Paso, TX, Ben Reyes of Kearney and Gilbert Reyes of Minnesota; and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and extended family. Memorials are suggested to Central Plains Hospice and Cozad Care Center. Online condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church with Father Mike Pampara and Father Don O'Brien as concelebrants. Burial will be at Buffalo Grove Cemetery. Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Christ the King Catholic Church. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1 to 8 and Wednesday until 5 at Berryman Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
