Rebecca Guerra of Cozad passed away January 7, 2017 at Cozad Care Center at the age of 84. Rebecca was born April 9, 1932 at Big Spring, Texas to Jose and Eremine (Lopez) Cañas. She was baptized in the First Mexican Church in Big Spring at the age of 13. On April 21, 1951, she married Jesus Guerra at Big Spring, Texas. The couple moved to Cozad in 1952. Rebecca worked at F & S Sausage, Southview Manor and Norm's Cafe. She was a translator for the hospital, doctors, police department and court house. Rebecca won Community Service Award in 1994 and was inducted into the Healthcare Hall of Fame in 2009. She was 'Gramma Guerra' to many people in town. She loved sports of all kind and went to many football games, wrestling matches, baseball games and swim meets. As busy as she was with all activities, she still made time for family, camping and vacations, and cooking supper for all of her family. Rebecca enjoyed crocheting, playing bingo with her bingo friends, collecting jewelry, dolls and salt and pepper shakers. Memorials are suggested to Aseracare Hospice, Kearney. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jesus 'Jesse' Sr.; brothers, Ismael Cañas and Joe Cañas; sister, Esther Lopez; grandson, Tyrone Guerra and son-in-law, Anthony Haggan. Survivors include her children, Irma (Junior) Dishman of Cozad, Irene (Doug) Kniesteadt of Lincoln, Aurelia 'Ralph' (Danny) Dishman of Cozad, Jesse Jr. (Beth) Guerra of Cozad, Vicky (Lance) Peterson of Cozad and Noemi 'Mimi' Haggan of Lincoln; honorary daughter, Deb Callihan; sister-in-law, Elena Cañas; brother, David Cañas; 35 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Services will be Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Berryman Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Susan Sukraw officiating. Burial will be at the Cozad Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1 to 8 at Berryman Funeral Home.
