Madeline M. Schmeeckle

Madeline Schmeeckle of Eustis passed away January 19, 2017 at Elwood Care Center at the age of 91. Madeline was born August 2, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska to Ray and Madeline (Feiler) Stoneburg. She graduated from Omaha North High School, and began working for Mutual of Omaha, rising to the position of Manager of the Contest Dept. On April 24, 1948, Madeline was united in marriage to Eugene Schmeeckle. The couple purchased an acreage in the Bellevue area, and began raising a family of five children. They moved to Western Nebraska in the Bridgeport and Gering areas, where Madeline was active in her church and community. She taught CCD, was a member of Altar Society and enjoyed Bridge and Garden Club. Madeline was a devoted mother, supporting her children in all their activities, and was a Leader for Campfire Girls and Cub Scouts. Madeline was a wonderful cook, making German pretzels, preparing wild game dishes and baking elaborate cakes for every family occasion. Gene and Madeline returned to Eustis in 1977, where they owned and operated the Shooten' Haus. Beside helping run the family business, Madeline supported her husband in founding the Eustis German Festival, "Wurst Tag Days", and was a member of the Legion Auxilary. Upon selling the business, they returned to Bridgeport for a time, retiring in Eustis in 2005. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gene; son, David Schmeeckle; grandson, James Vick; and 2 great grandsons, Corbin Reffalt and Christian Vick. Survivors include her children, Stephanie (Dennis) Vick of Lakewood, CO, Mark (Janet) Schmeeckle of Gering, Lynne (Carey) Kanno of Scottsbluff, Bill (Joyce) Schmeeckle of Lincoln and Christine (Robert) Horst of Omaha; grandchildren, Jason, Anne, Marc, Laura, Lisa, Ryan, Luke, Will and Samantha; great grandchildren, Halley, Zach, Luke, Natalie, Carly, Jaydan, Cayden, Theo, Rose and Linnyn; and a sister, Jane Manganaro. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 27, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Cozad. Burial will be at the East Cemetery in Eustis. Rosary will be recited Thursday, January 26, 2017 at 7 pm at Christ the King Catholic Church. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 to 5 at Berryman Funeral Home.
