Douglas Lee Swan of Cozad passed away March 21, 2017 at his home at the age of 73. Doug was born August 12, 1943 at Gothenburg, Nebraska to Melvin and Florence (Henderson) Swan. He grew up on the family farm, and graduated from Gothenburg High School with the class of 1961. He was baptized in the Gothenburg Evangelical Free Church at the age of 10, and accepted Christ at the age of 12. He joined the US Air Force in 1964, and married Kay Haynes in 1965. While in the Air Force, he served as a C-133 Crew Chief. Doug received the Air Force Commendation Medal and was awarded Crew Chief of the Year. He was proud of the time he spent serving his country. Following his service commitment, Doug and Kay moved to Cozad to start their family. Doug worked as a postal carrier for over 30 years and was very active in the community. He served as a City Council member, on the Cozad Housing Board, was a member of the Lions Club, VFW, and Legion. Doug was a faithful member of his church serving as an usher and helping with the Awana Youth Program. He enjoyed woodworking, making furniture and toys, being outside and on the road, and anything to do with planes, trucks and trains. Doug's most treasured times were spent with his kids and grandkids. He will be missed by many. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Kay of Cozad; son, Michael (Karla) Swan of Lincoln and daughter, Melissa (Andres Salazar) Swan of Longmont, CO; grandchildren, Caden and Luke Swan of Lincoln and Andrew and Olivia Leaming of Longmont, CO; brothers, Paul (Kathy) Swan of Buffalo Grove, IL and Nick (Linda) Swan of Gothenburg; many nieces, nephews, extended family and close coffee buddies. Services will be Friday, March 24, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gothenburg Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Scott Newman officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 to 8 with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 at Berryman Funeral Home.
