Calvin J. Hockley of Cozad passed away November 12, 2018 at Cozad Care Center at the age of 93. Cal was born October 5, 1925 in Ridgway, Colorado on the family ranch to Jay and Rosa (Cutschall) Hockley. The family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas after his siblings were grown. Cal entered the Army Air Corp in January of 1945. He served in WWII in a B17 Bomber Squadron as the Ball Turret Gunner. He was shot down twice, the second time was captured and taken to Stalag Luft I at Barth, Germany, just before the end of the war. He was repatriated to Texas after he was freed. He attended Del Mar Junior College and met his wife Joan there while singing in an operetta. Cal and Joan were married on January 28, 1947. They were blessed with three children, Sandra, Mike and Sarah. In 1957, the family moved to Cozad where they established their home. Cal was a loving and devoted husband and father. He worked as a carpenter and then bought the Midway Resort at Midway Lake. He became a member of the Masonic Lodge and later became a Shriner and was also a member of Eastern Star. Cal enjoyed taking his children water skiing, ice skating, deer hunting and attended all of their school functions. Cal had owned and operated a Metal Bin and Building business, and was a partner with Roger German until Roger became ill. He was preceded in death by his wife Joan; his parents; his mother and father in-law; his brother-in-law, Dana B. Dillon and all of his six older sisters. Survivors include his children, Sandra Hockley of Cozad, Mike (Kathy) Hockley of Overland Park, KS and Sarah Hockley of Eustis; three grandchildren, Chris Hockley, Anne Hockley Crofford and Andrew Jensen; sister-in-law, Frances E. Dillon; four great grandchildren and many Dillon cousins. Online condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com. Services will be held Friday, November 16, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cozad United Methodist Church with Pastor Doug Gahn officiating. Private burial with military honors will be at Fairview Cemetery, prior to the service. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 pm to 8 pm at Berryman Funeral Home.
