Evelyn Eva Bogle was born on November 7, 1937 in Granite City, Illinois to Earl A. and Juanita (Swanson) Hoffman. The oldest girl, their family soon added three boys: Earl, Eugene and Ronald, before moving to California. Evelyn was a graduate of Long Beach High School, Long Beach CA, and her High School memory of marching in the Rose Parade meant watching it every year. She passed away at Lexington Regional Center in Lexington, Nebraska on March 19, 2019.
The California girl loved dancing, and that is when she first met her "sailor from Nebraska". In June of 1961, she came to Elwood to see "the farm" and its peacocks. It was the first time she heard the cry of "Help" throughout the evening, and she was hooked! Geoffrey K. Bogle and Evelyn were married November 4, 1961 in Bellflower, California. With his service in the Navy complete, Geoff and Evelyn moved back to the community of Elwood, Nebraska on Mother's day, 1962, where she continued to reside for the remainder of her life. With the births of Beverly Lyn (1963) and Jeffrey William (1964), their family was complete. While her occupation was "farm wife", she was much more than that.
A vegetable garden, (that increased in size every year), canning and freezing the harvest kept her busy. And, from those harvests, her cooking skills became legendary. Geoff always had more than enough help to work cattle on the farm, just because they knew there would be a noon meal feast and "Evelyn's pies." Yet, when Geoff would call, Evelyn would stop everything, to relocate a pickup, move cattle, or run to town for parts.
Volunteering and service to others was special to Evelyn. She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Elwood, teaching Sunday School and serving. There were numerous years of Scouts and 4-H leadership, funnel cakes at the Gosper County Fair and Legion stand pies. She was initiated into the Order of the Eastern Star on June 19, 1972 and served as Worthy Matron of the Chapter 6 times. It was during this time, that she had Geoff made the commitment to participate in the Shriners organization adding fun and fellowship to their lives.
Through their participation, they met so many friends, who knew Geoff and Evelyn through their wit, pranks and laughter. They attended Shrine parades, Football games and the Shrine Circus. She did ride a camel and hold the alligator! Travelling across the United States to attend the Potentate's Balls, those travels soon led to international travels as Evelyn had the travel bug. At each event, there was a dance, and she had her sailor as a partner. The Minneapolis Shiner's Hospital for Children became her cause, sewing blankets, gathering toys, and serving those families.
When they moved to town, the flower gardens replaced the vegetable garden. While the peacocks were no longer in the yard, she continued her love of them with decorations throughout her home. Feathers were always present. She will always be remembered for her love of shiny jewelry, always getting her nails done, and her love of the family’s peacocks.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Earl A. and Juanita Hoffmann. Her three younger brothers Earl F. Hoffmann, Eugene F. Hoffmann and Ronald S. Hoffman. She will be missed here by her husband of 57 years, Geoffrey Bogle, daughter Beverly Louthan and Daniel Louthan of Smithfield, son Jeffrey and wife Pamela Bogle of Elwood, grandchildren, Jessica (Bogle) Kotschwar and husband Trenton of Lincoln, Margaret Louthan of Broken Bow, and Benjamin Bogle of Elwood. Her sister-in-law, Rhonda Gianessi of Lakewood, CA, and the nephew and nieces, Kevin Hoffman and wife Lily, of Anaheim, CA, Denise Bayne and husband Joseph, Dylan and Payton, of Coraopolis, PA, and Christine VanRooy and husband Gerardus, and Eva, of Santa Ana, CA. Memorials are suggested to Tehama Shrine Transportation Fund. Services will be held Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at First Christian Church in Elwood with Pastor Darrel Wissmann officiating. Burial will be at Elwood Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Friday, March 22, 2019 from 6pm to 8pm at First Christian Church. Berryman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
