Gary Wayne Mitchell

Gary Wayne “Mitch” Mitchell, 85, recently of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, passed away on January 19, 2022, in Fishersville, VA. 

Gary was the only son of Florence (Bailey) and Marion Mitchell, of Eustis, Nebraska. He graduated from Eustis High School in 1953. He proudly served in the submarine service in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959. Gary married his high school sweetheart, Geraldine Struempler, in December 1959.  They had celebrated 62 years of marriage. They lived and raised their family in Ralston, Nebraska. Gary worked for OPPD in Omaha, Nebraska, until his retirement. In his leisure time Gary was an active member of the American Legion in Ralston, Ne, and an avid Cornhusker fan. He and Geraldine retired to Bella Vista, Arkansas and together they traveled extensively during their retirement, while Gary also enjoyed golfing and fishing. In 2016, they relocated to Stuarts Draft, Virginia.

Gary is predeceased by his parents and his wife, Geraldine. He is survived by his children: Shareene (John) Berti; Maureen (Mitch) Hammer; Daneene (Richard Mills) Mitchell; Steve (Amy) Mitchell; Dawn (Joel) McCray; his grandchildren: Peter (Becky) and Matt Berti; Lee Tolliver II, Rose (Sam) Burt, Lewis and Kelly Hammer; Emilie, Erin, and Jacob Mills; Abigail, Benjamin, and Luke Mitchell; Nathan and Sarah McCray; great grandchildren Ellie and Jack Berti.  He was greatly loved and will be sorely missed.

Funeral services will be held jointly for Gary with his wife Geraldine, on Friday, February 11, at the Buffalo Lutheran Church, Lexington, NE at 11 a.m., Pastor Rasmussen officiating. Gary and Geraldine will be laid to rest at Christ Lutheran Cemetery in Oconto, NE immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to The Shenandoah House in Fishersville, Va.
