Harry L. Hart

Harry Hart of Cozad passed away August 27, 2018 at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital at the age of 91. Harry was born November 1, 1926 in Grand Island, Nebraska to David Lane and Carrie (Queale) Hart. He graduated from Cozad High School with the class of 1943. He then went on to serve two years in the United States Navy during World War II. Following his military experience, he attended Nebraska Wesleyan University. Harry was united in marriage to Jeanne McMillan on September 5, 1948 (close to 70 years of wedded bliss). Harry and Jeanne operated a livestock and grain farm near Cozad. Harry was known statewide as an owner/operator of a purebred Suffolk and Hampshire sheep flock, was on the Midwest Wool board of directors, was widely known for his support of youth in the sheep industry and was dedicated to 4-H. Throughout his career, he was awarded several distinguished honors: UNL Block and Bridle Hall of Fame in 1987, Cozad Farm Family of the Year in 2005, 2007 Dawson County Hall of Fame, Ted and Alice Doane Outstanding Sheep Producer Award in 2015 and Ak-Sar-Ben Ag Leadership Award. His hobbies included softball, baseball, bowling, golfing, watching any UNL sport, and raising and racing homing pigeons. He was an original stockholder of Darr Feedlot, Inc. and a long time member of the Cozad United Methodist Church and Cozad Elks Lodge 2250. Survivors include his wife Jeanne Hart of Cozad; brother Richard (Ramona) Hart of Boise, ID; daughter Pat (David) Gewecke of Arvada, CO; sons Bruce (M.J.) Hart and Jim (Susan) Hart, both of Cozad; 7 grandchildren, Eric Gewecke of Omaha, Cheryl Gewecke of Denver, Joel Gewecke of Shoreline, WA, Natalie (Daniel) Connolly of Edmond, OK, Logan Hart of Los Alamos, NM, Emily (Mike) Stinger of Omaha and Elise (Jake) Owens of Omaha; 8 great grandchildren, Aedon, Dante, Annabelle, Madelyn, Clara, Audrey, Atticus and Matilda.   Online condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com. Memorials can be made to the family for later designation. Services will be Friday, August 31, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cozad United Methodist Church with Pastor Doug Gahn officiating. Burial with Military Honors at the Cozad Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 to 8pm with family receiving friends from 6 to 8pm at Berryman Funeral Home.
