Jesus B. Vergara

Jesus B. Vergara of Cozad passed away Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney at the age of 84. Jesus was born April 9, 1939 in Robstown, Texas in the family home to Eliseo and Angelita (Diaz) Vergara. He was the last of 11 children.

When he was young, he would go armadillo and rabbit hunting to help the family. He also enjoyed fly fishing. Jesus left school in the 8th grade to get a job and help pay bill.

He went wherever he could to find work, cotton picking, construction, oil fields, ship yards, city sanitation, and helping one of his brothers with his gardening business. When he moved to Cozad, he went to work at Tyson Packing Plant in Lexington, also helping with interpretation. His last job was at the Haven House as night supervisor. Checking people in, cooking, getting supplies. Jesus was with Haven House for 17 years. 

Survivors include his children from his second marriage, Maria (Sid) Turner, Connie (William) DiAngilo, Angie (Gary) Garcia and Jesus Eliseo Jr.; his wife, Deborah E. Cawthra Vergara and her daughter, Elizabeth (Brad) Fischer, and their 4 children and her son, Johnathan Johnston; 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

A family led memorial service for Jesus will be held Friday, October 27, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the Living Hope Assembly of God Church in Cozad.
