Richard C. Thies, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Meadowlark Pointe Assisted Living at the age of 92. Richard's journey began on April 11, 1932, in Hartington, Nebraska, he moved to Beatrice at a young age.
At 17, Richard answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Stationed on a destroyer ship off the coast of Korea and Japan, Richard displayed unwavering courage and dedication to his duty. He was married to Irene Schew in 1955.
In 1989 he married Glennis. After a fulfilling career spanning 37 years with the Nebraska Department of Roads, Richard retired with the title of engineer in 2001. Retirement brought new adventures as he and his wife traveled the country, attending Navy reunions and exploring new destinations. Together, they made cherished memories camping and residing in their Florida home for 14 years before returning to Cozad in April 2024.
Along with Richard's service in the military, his accomplishments included being a skilled marksman, belonging to a rifle club, and leading a 4-H rifle club. He found joy in bowling, flying remote-controlled airplanes, and the artistry of wood carving.
Richard was a quiet-natured man and loved his family deeply. He was preceded in death by his infant great-granddaughter, Tassidi Chavez-Buerer, and stepdaughter, Amy Schultheiss. He is mourned by his surviving loved ones, his wife, Glennis Thies, his children Wendee Rush of Holdrege, NE, David Thies of Willis, TX, and Dana Chavez of Shelton, NE, along with stepson Tony (Jeri) Schultheiss of Eustis NE and stepdaughter Debbie (Tony) Janus of Eustis NE. Richard leaves a legacy of love that his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren will hold dear.
Richard Thies will be remembered not only for his remarkable achievements and contributions but also for the warmth of his heart and the kindness of his soul. He touched the lives of all who knew him, leaving many treasured memories.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held at a later date. Rest in peace, dear Richard/Dad/Grandpa. Your memory will forever live on in our hearts.
