Richard Fred Roenfeldt, 83, of Treasure Island, Florida, passed away on April 19, 2019, at Sable Palms Assisted Living Facility in Largo, Florida.
Richard was born in Grand Island on April 18, 1936, to Russell F. and Edna Alice Roenfeldt. He will be truly missed as he was a very smart business man, loving brother, father and husband.
Richard grew up and lived most of his life in Grand Island, graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1953, where he played on the 1953, Grand Island Senior High Hall of Fame state football championship team as an all-state running back and offensive line tackle.
Richard as a young man worked as a milk man at Fairacres Dairy, followed by working for the U.S. Postal Service in Grand Island as a letter carrier for many years.
Richard was married two times in his life, first to MaryAnne Mullen (Roenfeldt) Kaspar and then Nancy Lee (Meves) Roenfeldt.
Richard, due to emphysema, retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1978, and he and his wife, Nancy, created their first business called Nadi’s Cactus and Succulents, which was mixed in with a ceramics business where they bought, grew and sold cactus, succulents and ceramics. The ceramics were made in their business home, from ceramic mud to kiln to hand painting of the “Hobo Clown peanut cactus holder.” With the entire mix of the business he and Nancy traveled yearly throughout Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California and Florida, buying plants to grow and resell.
Richard was also a licensed auctioneer, antique dealer and appraiser. This lead into opening Roenfeldt’s antique store, followed by Roenfeldt’s Gift Shoppe in Grand Island Mall.
Some of his passions were cooking, traveling, nice cars, stock market and his family.
In 1997 he retired and he and his wife, Nancy, moved to Treasure Island, Florida, to enjoy the warm weather, beaches and fresh seafood life.
He is survived by his sister and two brothers, Sharon Call, Toby Roenfeldt and Karen Woldt, Bob and Connie Roenfeldt, all of Cozad; seven children, Steven and Sheila Dickinson of Tustin, CA, Michael and Terri Dickinson of Grand Island, Rick and Marilyn Roenfeldt of Ashburn, VA, Becky and Nick Freelend of Marquette, Roger and Ellen Roenfeldt of Central City, Randall and Mary (McDonald) Roenfeldt of Grand Island, and Kevin and Jaime Roenfeldt of Pinellas Park, FL; 23 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; as well as 10 nephews and nieces.
